What is Fire Engineering?

Fire engineering is the application of scientific and engineering principles, rules (Fire Codes) and expert judgement, based on an understanding of the phenomena and effects of fire and of the reaction and behaviour of people to fire; to protect people, property and the environment from the destructive effects of fire.

The term fire engineering is widely misused and not well understood; there are two main types fire engineering:

Fire safety engineering: where the engineer is responsible for development of fire strategies, e.g.  location and number of stairs, smoke control regimes and structural fire protection measures.

Fire protection engineering: where the engineer is responsible for development of fire systems, e.g. automatic fire suppression and fire detection systems.

How can FRMA help?

Fire Strategy Development

If you’re in the process of renovating or changing the use of an existing building, or creating new premises, the chances are you’ll be under pressure to create a comprehensive fire strategy. Fire strategy development is essential for gaining building regulations approval for any new building, and any building that’s being renovated or having its primary use changed.

The fire strategy will typically focus on issues such as:
•  Evacuation routes.
•  Fire rating of walls, doors, floors and structures.
•  External fire spread issues.
•  Facilities for the fire brigade.

Fire strategies can also cover the construction process, showing how the standards of fire safety are to be maintained throughout all stages of the construction. This is particularly important when the work is being carried out while parts of the building are occupied.

Fire Risk Management Associates (FRMA)’s team of fire engineers are experts in the preparation of fire strategy reports for all types of buildings. FRMA can explore all of the issues and relevant legislation involved to help smooth the planning and/or construction process. As a minimum, FRMA fire strategies will cover prevention and prescriptive regulatory requirements such as Approved Document B, BS 9999 (2017), BS7974 or NFPA 101.

Fire protection systems

These objectives will be achieved by a variety of means including such activities as:
•  The assessment of the hazards and risks of fire and its effects.
•  The mitigation of potential fire damage by proper design, construction, arrangement, and use of buildings, materials, structures, industrial processes, transportation systems and similar.
•   The appropriate level of evaluation for the optimum preventive and protective measures necessary to limit the consequences of fire.
•  The development, installation and maintenance of fire detection, fire suppression, fire control and fire related communication systems and equipment.
•  The direction and control of appropriate equipment and manpower in the strategy and function of fire fighting and rescue operations.
